Women for Election In Conversation with Penny Sharpe :: Recording
Penny Sharpe is the ALP Leader of the Opposition in the NSW Parliament’s Upper House and Shadow Minister for the Environment. First elected to the NSW Legislative Council in 2005, Penny has held a variety of Government and Opposition portfolios including Heritage, Transport and Planning, Family and Community Services, as well as Disability Inclusion.
Advancing reproductive rights is one of the reasons Penny entered Parliament. In 2018 she was successful in co-sponsoring a bill to put in place safe access zones around abortion clinics and most recently was one of 15 co-sponsors to lead the debate on abortion reform in the upper house, and successfully decriminalise abortion in NSW.
Officially Penny is recognised as the first lesbian to serve in NSW Parliament. However, she just prefers to think of herself as the first openly lesbian member to serve in NSW Parliament.
