Susan Templeman was collecting gardening supplies at Bunnings when she finally fell over the line in the Blue Mountains electorate of Macquarie.

For 16 days, the Labor MP focused on her garden as she waited on tenterhooks to see whether she had seen off the challenge of Liberal Sarah Richards, finally claiming the seat on a margin of just 0.19 per cent.

After the May election, Australia’s most marginal electorates are still overwhelmingly represented by female MPs, with their male counterparts dominating the safest seats.

51 seats in the House of Representatives reveals three out of five (60 per cent) of the Coalition’s electorates on a margin of 3 per cent or less are held by women.
